Recharging and Resetting

Life can get overwhelming with work, responsibilities, and constant digital distractions. Every now and then, I need to step away and take time for myself in nature. It helps me reset, clear my mind, and regain focus for the days ahead.

Being outdoors engages all my senses in a way that daily life often doesn’t. The fresh air, the wind on my face, and the scent of grass and soil create an immediate sense of calm. Springtime, in particular, is full of vibrant colors—green fields, blooming flowers, and bright blue skies. Walking through these landscapes, I notice the different textures around me—the roughness of rocks, the softness of grass, the smoothness of clay. Standing by the sea, watching the waves crash against the shore, I am reminded of the sheer force and unpredictability of nature.

At the same time, it’s frustrating to see how little care people sometimes show for the environment. Litter scattered along paths and plastic waste in natural spaces are clear signs of how disconnected we’ve become from nature. It’s a reminder that we should be more mindful of our impact and take better care of the places that offer us so much.

Although finding these spaces in Malta can sometimes be a challenge, there are still accessible places to reconnect with nature. Whether it’s a quiet coastal walk, a countryside trail, or a hidden green space, finding your favorite spot to destress can make all the difference. Seeking out natural landscapes, even in a small way, helps create moments of peace and restoration.

For me, these walks are more than just a way to disconnect—they bring a deep sense of nostalgia. They take me back to Sunday afternoon walks with my family and my grandmother, reliving those moments of togetherness. I can almost taste the warm ricotta pie she made with all the love and care in the world, paired with a simple cup of coffee that always seemed to taste better in her company. These memories remind me that nature is not just about the present—it’s a bridge to the past, a connection to the people and moments that shaped us.

Taking time to disconnect is necessary. Even a short walk outdoors, a deep breath of fresh air, or a few minutes spent listening to natural sounds can make a difference in balancing the pressures of daily life. Nature provides a space to slow down, reset, and gain the energy needed to take on the challenges ahead. This is one of the ways I care for my mental health—what do you do?
