Life’s Transitions

How Occupational Therapy Has Shaped My Journey

Life is a series of transitions. Some are expected, others come out of nowhere, but all bring their own challenges and opportunities for growth. As I stand on the threshold of a new role, one that feels both exciting and unfamiliar, I can’t help but reflect on how the foundation laid by occupational therapy (OT) has prepared me for this moment.

Occupational therapy is not just a profession—it’s a philosophy rooted in helping people navigate life’s changes, whether big or small. Whether guiding someone through physical rehabilitation, mental wellness, or lifestyle adaptations, OT is about helping individuals rediscover their independence, purpose, and balance. In this way, the essence of OT is deeply intertwined with the journey of life itself.

One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned through OT is how to embrace change with adaptability and resilience. Every OT session I’ve facilitated has been about helping someone find their footing amid change. Whether it was helping a person regain mobility after an injury or guiding someone through recovery, each experience was a reminder that transitions are inevitable but manageable.

As I embark on my new journey—one that diverges from the traditional OT role—it’s not a farewell to OT but rather an evolution. I am not leaving OT behind—it is part of who I am, my identity. I always was and forever shall be an OT, and I will continue to practice OT, just in a different way. The skills and insights I’ve developed as an OT professional have shaped the way I see the world and how I approach challenges. They have given me the ability to make meaningful change, both in my own life and in the lives of others.

In this new role, my hope is to take the essence of OT and apply it in a broader context—to help people become more independent, empowered, and integrated within their communities. The work may look different, but the heart of it will always be OT. I am excited to create new opportunities for people to engage in life more fully, while continuing to honour the values that have defined my OT journey.

Transitions can feel like a mix of excitement and anxiety. But thanks to my background, I know that with the right tools, mindset, and support, I can face whatever comes my way. OT has taught me that every role, every transition, is an opportunity for growth. It’s not about saying goodbye to OT but rather using everything I’ve learned to thrive in a new context.

So, as I step forward, I’m filled with gratitude for the path that led me here and eager for what lies ahead. Life, much like OT, is about adapting, learning, and moving onwards and upwards.
